Fiber cement doesn't forgive shortcuts. Cut precisely, fastened by the book, and sealed at every joint, it's built to hold its shape for decades.
Fiber cement siding, often installed under the James Hardie name among a few others, is noticeably heavier and denser than vinyl or wood, and that reality shapes nearly every step of handling it on site. Cutting it kicks up fine dust that calls for the right equipment and ventilation, and fastening mistakes — too few nails, or nails placed in the wrong spot on the panel — tend to show up as cracking weeks or months down the line. Our crew runs fiber cement rated blades with dust control on every cut and follows the exact fastening pattern each manufacturer specifies for that panel profile.
Joint treatment is really where a fiber cement job succeeds or fails. Every butt joint needs to be back-primed or factory-sealed, and horizontal joints need proper flashing behind them so water sheds away from the wall instead of creeping in over time. Skip this step and nobody notices on install day — but staining or soft spots show up within a few years. We treat every joint on a fiber cement project the same way: primed, flashed, and caulked with a product rated for the material.
Homeowners around Marylhurst, OR who choose fiber cement are usually drawn to its fire resistance, its resistance to pests, and how much longer it holds paint compared to wood siding. It's a heavier lift to install correctly, which is part of why our crew spends extra time on layout before the first cut is even made, planning joint locations to land away from high-visibility spots on the elevation where possible. After #YEARS years working with fiber cement across the region, the lesson has stayed the same: this material doesn't forgive much, so the prep work matters more here than it does with lighter siding options.
A lot of homeowners find it's worth it for the fire resistance, durability, and how long it holds paint, even though material and labor costs run higher than vinyl. We're happy to walk through the trade-offs for your project.
Many products arrive factory-finished, but field-cut edges and joints still need to be primed and sealed against moisture, even on pre-finished panels.
Installed correctly with properly sealed joints, fiber cement siding commonly lasts several decades, and periodic recaulking and repainting stretches that even further.
